Resolve to Safeguard your Home in 2012
If you're still building your New Year's resolutions for 2012, consider adding this one to your list:
Safeguard your home and protect your loved ones with a home security system.
In the United States there are over 2 million residential break-ins each year. The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service also suggested making it a New Year's resolution to be "fire safe in 2012" and that doing so can truly benefit you and your family.
“There are two basic 'Must Haves' that are integral to fire safety year-round, but especially this time of year,” said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers. “We know that having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, in combination with a home escape plan, saves lives. We’re asking residents to ensure these life-saving devices are present and functional in their homes.”

Whether or not you decide to have a home security system installed, make it a priority to be more aware of the vulnerabilities all around your home. Here are some additional recommendations from NorthStar Alarm to help you resolve to safeguard your home in 2012:
- Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors
- Secure sliding glass doors
- Make sure windows are locked
- Cover windows that see into the garage
- Keep a fire extinguisher readily accessible
- Don't leave a spare key in an obvious location
- Plant thorny bushes below first floor windows
- Keep a collapsible escape ladder near second floor window
- Install and maintain smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
- Make sure the numbers on your house are reflective and visible for emergency personnel
- Refrain from publicly posting vacation plans on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media outlets
